Fifth Annual Inclusive Sport Summit: Wednesday, February 16, 2022

University of Colorado Boulder

CU Athletics and Recreation Services invite you to join us for our annual Inclusive Sport Summit. This year’s theme is “Lead like a champion: Paving the way to an equitable playing field”.

During this summit participants will...

  • Learn what equity is and how it impacts athletes across disciplines, identities and age groups.

  • Identify strategies they can use to be an effective ally and promote equity on campus and within the greater community.

  • Build skills and practice techniques for addressing inequities to help increase student retention, engagement and success.

  • Connect with departments and programs across campus that are available to support students, staff and faculty.

The Inclusive Sports Summit is free and open to faculty, staff, students and community members.

The Inclusive Sport Summit will be hybrid this year. The in person sessions will take place from 11am-1:30pm in the Arrow Touchdown Club. Lunch will be provided, courtesy of Pasta Jay's. You can see a detailed map and parking areas here.

8:50 a.m. - 9:50 a.m. Kickoff and Opening Session - Name Image and Likeness: The impact on domestic and international student-athletes and intercollegiate athletics
Presented by: Rick George, CU Athletics, Timothy F. Bryson, University of Maryland-College Park

Presenters will detail their experiences working with name, image and likeness (NIL) legislation and programming for staff, coaches and student athletes. Bryson will bring awareness to the inequitable processes and opportunities for international student athletes to capitalize on their name, image and likeness.


 
10 a.m. -10:50 a.m. The Loyola Project – a conversation about breaking the racial barrier and the history of the 1963 Loyola Ramblers
Presented by: Patrick Creadon, Director - The Loyola Project, Micah Smith, Denver7 Social Equity Reporter

In 1963, at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, the Loyola Ramblers of Chicago broke racial barriers and changed college basketball forever. Now, nearly 60 years later, this legendary team will be reexamined by Loyola basketball player and co-captain, Lucas Williamson. Woven together with archival footage and modern day interviews, this captivating story continues to provide inspiration in the fight for equality. Micah Smith will interview director Patrick Creadon about the film as Creadon shares key insights. The film is available to see here. The password to access the film is CUDEI.

11 a.m. -11:50 a.m. Student-Athletes Experience: Glory And Defeat
Presented by: CU Boulder club sport and varsity student-athletes

The life of a student athlete is often glorified and embraced by many, but what is the true reality of the student athlete experience? This panel will address issues of social responsibility and the pressures of being a student athlete in a world where you compete for championships on the playing surface, in the classroom and in the community. Students will use their personal stories and experiences to bring light to issues of access, privilege, perception, opportunities and well-being. These narratives will also provide solutions to address challenges brought by the student athlete experience.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Olympic Sports: challenges, opportunities and sport altering decisions

Megan Ritch, USA Triathlon

Individuals from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) will discuss their DEI efforts in collaboration with practitioners at the USOPC and the National governing bodies. The individuals will have a conversation about inclusion in Olympic sports and the challenges, opportunities and trends in inclusion in sport, and how diversity, equity and inclusion appears in sport both nationally and internationally.

Student Success and Wellbeing through Adaptive Sport and Recreation
Presented by: Kyle Taulman, CU-Boulder,  Nicole Larocque, CU-Boulder and Joe Adenmatten, CU-Boulder
 
Meet Kyle Taulman, a sophomore majoring in Engineering and a USA Paralympic Alpine Ski Team hopeful. Join a conversation about the value of recreational and competitive adaptive sports in supporting student success and well-being as well as programs being developed to support the adaptive community here at CU Boulder.

3 p.m. -3:50 p.m. Leveling the playing field: building a more diverse and equitable sport industry
Presented by: Vince Pierson of the Black Sports Business Academy, Denise Bradford of the John McLendon Foundation, and Amy Huchthausen of the Asian American & Pacific Islander Athletics Alliance

Panelists will detail their efforts to help diversify the sports industry based on their personal mission, organizational goals and values.

4 p.m. -4:50 p.m. Accessibility, Inclusion, and Representation of the LGBTQ+ community in Outdoor Recreation
Presented by: Natasha Daney, Colorado State University

The presentation will introduce a brief history of outdoor recreation, define common LGBTQ+ identities and discuss the mental health benefits of outdoor recreation. The most common barriers to accessing recreational opportunities and spaces will be presented for the LGBTQ+ community, as well as for other minority groups (women, racial/ethnic minorities/ low socioeconomic status), and the impact of these potential intersectional identities will be discussed. Results from a survey will be discussed alongside other research to ultimately suggest methods to reduce or eliminate barriers to accessing outdoor recreation for minority groups, and specifically for the LGBTQ+ community.
